Thereisn't really a "great" engine for the 159 unfortunately, but if you're married to the idea of owning a 159, I'd go for the 1.9 diesel and get it remapped. Yes, it will be slower than the 3.2, but not by a lot, and you'll get double the mileage. Close to triple even, probably. I'd also avoid the Q4 if I were you.

My local Alfa specialist said it's a very common problem with the 159, but one hell of a job to do on the 3.2 V6 - not really worth the money. Might be worth doing if and when I have to get the timing chain replaced.
Havegleaned a little more from the local dealer - they reckon it is problem with most/all of the 3.2 litre V6 engines - apparently something to do with cam variators. They have pulled a new car off the lot with the same issue to see if they can find a fix, but seem to be relying on Alfa Romeo Australia/New Zealand to talk to Italy about a

Both times car suddenly lost power after some hours of motorway cruising. Both times there was about 1/8 tank left or about 10 litres. First time was about a year ago on Hume Hwy. Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon Bythe mid-1980s Alfa Romeo had pretty much conquered the rust issue but product planning seemed, at best, haphazard. It was one of the few manufacturers still making mid-sized rear-wheel-drive cars but was having trouble in making real advances; the 1984 Alfa 90 sedan was really not much more than a reskinned Alfetta with a V6 c48j.
