The FE is FANTASTIC for a huge 3.0 Diesel engine in a 1700KG car. The G30 530d is >25% more efficient than the F10 530d as per ARAI, and I think it does translate to real world improvements. In fact, the 2.0L N47 in the F30 320d was only marginally more efficient as per ARAI than the G30 530d, with both receiving 18.xx KM/L ARAI estimates.

The four-cylinder 520d is a well-known option in the 5 Series range, and historically has sold in huge numbers as the entry-level diesel. It’s more than adequate for the job for the majority of 5 Series customers. Power is a generous 190hp, while a 400Nm torque figure is more than adequate for getting up to motorway speeds.
