When it comes to the drive, we were out testing the BMW 220d M Sport Gran Coupe - complete with Sport Automatic Transmission and manual Gearshift Paddles. With 190hp and a 0-62mph time of just 7.5s, this car packed a pleasing punch. The 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with three driving modes to choose from; Eco, Comfort, and Sport.

Holding 390 litres, the BMW’s boot is 10 litres bigger than those of the new 1 Series hatchback and the Volkswagen Golf. It also compares well with the boots of the Audi TT (292 litres) and There’s a 470-litre boot back there, which is 30 litres up on the two-door model, and only a little down on the 3 Series. Combine this with the wide-opening hatchback tailgate, and that makes the Gran Coupe quite a practical option. Fold the 40:20:40 split-folding back seats flat, and there’s 1,290 litres of space to make use of.
